I’ve always hated SIM cards. They’re one of the worst examples of fiddly tech – like trackpads, earbuds and ports on the back of monitors – where manual precision is crucial. My fingers feel buttered half the time, so I never found it easy to insert these micro-wafers into the tiny slots inside old phones, nor into the sliding trays of newer ones. Google will soon let you hide adverts in its search results, but only after you’ve seen them. Currently, Google labels each paid result as ‘Sponsored’. But it will soon show a section at the top of results, with a single, larger label that stays in view as you scroll. You can click a button at the bottom of the section to ‘hide’ the sponsored results (see screenshot right), but you’ll have to scroll through them first. Google said this button lets you “collapse text ads with a single click” if you want to see only “organic” (unpaid) results (www.snipca.com/56665). I’ve twice bought Iiyama monitors from Continental Ltd (www.iiyama-monitors.co.uk) and the service has been excellent on both occasions. A few years ago, I ordered two items in one purchase, and they emailed me to say they’d be arriving in two separate deliveries. This was very helpful. The lady I spoke to was polite and seemed to know monitors inside out. More recently, I treated myself to a £500 55in ProLite 4K Iiyama monitor (pictured). I ordered it at 4pm and it arrived the next morning – amazingly fast, and well packaged too. What’s a simpler junk remover than BleachBit? Q I’ve been a long-time user of BleachBit (www.bleachbit.org), but I’m finding it harder to use. It still removes junk when I set it to, but it seems to have added so many settings that I don’t need. Is there a simpler alternative? EARBUDS | £179 from Amazon www.snipca.com/56749 Nil paid Nothing, the quirkily named British company, has gained a reputation for delivering exceptional smartphones and earbuds since launching its first phone in 2022. We reviewed its Nothing Ear (a) earbuds back in Issue 684 when they were £80, but Amazon has been selling them for £70 recently (www.snipca.com/56753) and they remain among the best budget ANC earbuds available. In fact, you’d be hard pressed to find better – with the only close competition being Sony’s WF-C700Ns (£69 from www.snipca.com/56707). COPILOT Discover the new ‘home experience’ Microsoft has redesigned the Copilot app for Windows 11 to provide a new ‘home experience’. This resembles a personalised start page, with various modules and a photo background. The modules include ‘Jump back into your files’, which displays your recent files so you can ask Copilot to summarise or look up information about them. The ‘Get guided help with your apps’ module lets you select a Windows app, such as Settings, Edge or Paint, then share your screen using Copilot Vision to get help using it. The new home screen includes buttons for creating different types of image (see screenshot below) – for example, photorealistic or watercolour. Currys has agreed to give Paul Ferris a full refund of £79.99 for the Acer Predator Connect W6x router he bought online (see Issue 718). The retailer had initially rejected his complaint that it hadn’t made it clear the router comes with a continental two-pin plug, making it incompatible with the UK’s three-pin system. Paul couldn’t have used a shaving adapter as a solution because they’re designed for low-power devices such as shavers and electric toothbrushes. Currys had said Paul should contact Acer for a replacement or refund. This was nonsense because as the retailer it had full responsibility for dealing with Paul. SOFTWARE WARNING! Google advertises its earbuds on its homepage I’ve come to expect rows of sponsored listings muddying Google’s search results. But it’s now showing me adverts before I’ve even typed anything. This recently appeared on Google’s homepage (www.google.com) just below the search box: ‘New! Pixel Buds 2a deliver rich audio and a great fit at an even better price’ (see screenshot right). Well, that’s good to know – thanks Google! It’s presented as an innocent link, as though Google has some important news to deliver. But one thing that flummoxed me for several weeks was how to change the duration times when you skip forward and back. By default these are set at 45 seconds forward and 10 seconds back, which are too short for my liking. To tweak these, click the top-right profile icon (1 in our screenshot) then Settings 2. ANDROID & iOS Translate foreign-language messages in WhatsApp WhatsApp can now translate messages you receive in certain foreign languages. This saves you copying the text to a translation app such as Google Translate to find out what it means. The translation feature works with messages in both individual and group chats. In WhatsApp for Android, you can currently translate six languages – including Spanish, Hindi and Portuguese – while the iOS app supports 19. To try the new option, long-press a foreign language message, then tap the three-dot menu icon and select Translate. WATCH OUT FOR… Sharp rise in Winter Fuel Payment scams What’s the threat? There’s been a sharp increase in scam text messages urging you to apply for 2025-2026 Winter Fuel Payments. Reports of these rose by 153 per cent in the final week of September, the Government said, following a decline over the summer. The messages typically claim to be from the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP), and say it hasn’t received your application to receive the payments (1 in our screenshot) or that a “prior application was unsuccessful” 2. Why has McAfee charged me for a second antivirus? LEAD CASE Q I’ve been using McAfee antivirus on my PC, two laptops and a smartphone, paying £109.90 a year for protection across unlimited devices. Last June, I bought another laptop, which had a trial of McAfee on it. However, because of severe illness I wasn’t able to set up the laptop for six weeks. When I finally did this, I found that McAfee had started another unlimited subscription on it, and charged me another £109.90. I obviously don’t want or need this, but I can’t contact McAfee about this. Will you be able to help? SMARTPHONE | £474 from ao.com www.snipca.com/56754 Right to repair Dutch company Fairphone has been around since 2013, but has operated in the shadows of the likes of Samsung, Apple and others. That’s a shame because the Fairphone 6 is unique for being the the only smartphone you can easily repair yourself. The overall specification is fairly average. BRAVE Choose the correct ad-blocking filters Like AdGuard – see our Workshop in Issue 721 (page 38) – Brave lets you block more ads and other online annoyances by enabling extra filter lists. These boost the protection offered by its Shields feature, provided you know which filters to use. Version 1.83 of the browser, released in early October, makes things easier by providing descriptions of its filter lists – rather than just their names. To view them, click Brave’s three-line menu button and select Settings then Shields, followed by ‘Content filtering’. In the ‘Filter lists’ section, you’ll now see descriptions of all available filters, such as ‘EasyList Cookie – Removes obtrusive cookie law notices’ (see screenshot below). WINDOWS 11 Use the opacity slider in Microsoft Paint Microsoft has added an opacity slider to Paint, letting you change the transparency of strokes made with the Pencil (1 in our screenshot below) and Brush 2 tools.
