Fear didn’t stop Shirley Uekert (Open Mind, Open Heart, page 34) from getting in a pool and learning to swim, and it didn’t stop her from taking her first trip overseas last year, either. Shirley’s son Ken lives in Germany, and she visited him in June. Her cousin Bonnie made all the arrangements and accompanied her. Ken lives in a centuries-old barn that has been converted into apartments in the historic municipality of Nussdorf, a place that thrilled Shirley. “It was nice to be in a lovely town with church bells ringing and roosters crowing to wake us up,” Shirley says.
