Kait Witte, the Director of Social Media and Partnerships at Michael Miller fabrics, recalls getting a call from designer Violet Craft two weeks before Quilt Market last spring. “She was asking for some of our Cotton Couture solids for an animal abstraction quilt she had in mind,” Witte says. “We already had our booth planned out, but we sent her the fabrics to use.” When the package arrived midweek, Violet’s creativity went into overdrive. The quilt she had in mind was a foundation paperpieced portrait of a lion. She began with the most detailed section—the eyes—but quickly found that the color palette she’d requested was all wrong. “The original palette was multicolored,” she says, “but I realized that what I really needed was for this quilt to be monochrome.” She…

If you’ve never tried paper piecing, you might be wondering what the fuss is about—all that paper, fabric waste, and tearing off the pattern pieces at the end. Why not stick with regular piecing methods? Here’s why. Paper piecing (also called foundation piecing) enables a quilter to quickly and easily sew odd angles, irregular shapes, and sharp points with razor-sharp accuracy that would otherwise take a lot of time to sew—if it would even be possible. With paper piecing, you aren’t locked into measurements that are easily accessed with a ruler, so the sky is the limit for both your quilt design and your accuracy. Paper piecing is a great skill for both novice and experienced quilters to understand. It’s not difficult— if you can sew on a line, you…

Ask him a question about quilting and this former professor of art and design is off and running, talking a mile a minute about form, meaning, and the importance of lingering over a quilt’s creation. But beneath that intensity is an appreciation for the most basic aspect of quilting. Knauer sewed his first quilt for his daughter Matilda and her response delighted him. “She wrapped herself in it and threw herself at me for a hug, and I fell in love with her reaction,” he says. “Quilts have a resonance that doesn’t exist in art that hangs on the wall.” That sentiment is based in Knauer’s knowledge of art and design, thanks to studies…
