Apple has quietly launched a new ‘Snapshot on Apple’ page at snapshot.apple.com, and it’s dedicated to showcasing musicians, athletes, and actors whose work appears on the company’s services. As of the time of writing, Apple had not formally launched the page, and it had a very basic layout with two scrolling rows of boxes. Each box has the name and headshot of a celebrity, with people such as Cate Blanchett, Lionel Messi, Drake and Stephen Curry featured. There are also boxes for the bands Coldplay and BTS. Clicking a box takes you to a dedicated page for that person or band. There, you can find out where you can experience their work on Apple’s platforms. Apple Intelligence has come in for its fair share of criticism since it was announced at the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in 2024, with delayed features and underwhelming performance dominating the headlines. Yet that doesn’t seem to have put off consumers, with a survey recently suggesting that a surprisingly high number would be willing to pay for the artificial intelligence (AI) system. The survey was conducted by investment firm Morgan Stanley and polled roughly 3,300 Americans. It found that 80% of respondents would be happy to pay for Apple Intelligence, with just 14% saying they wouldn’t pay and 6% being unsure. Of those prepared to cough up, 22% would pay $15 (about £11) or more per month, while 30% would be willing to pay between $10 and $14.99 a month…

Previews or fullsized images You can save local storage space by keeping smaller, preview copies of your photos and videos on your device, and the full-sized versions in iCloud. On a Mac, go to Photos > Settings > iCloud, and on your iPhone or iPad, go to Settings > Apps > Photos. Then choose ‘Optimise [device] Storage’ to display preview images and videos, or Download Originals for the full-fat versions. The iCloud Photos service uploads every photo and video you take (on your iPhone, say) and stores them in iCloud so you can easily access them on any of your Apple devices. You use iCloud Drive as your online storage space – a little like an external drive you can access from your iPhone, iPad Mac and Windows device, and also on the homepage at iCloud.com. Data stored on your iCloud Drive is synced across your devices. So, for example, if you’re working on a Pages document on your Mac but have to leave to catch a train, you can close it on your computer, then carry on working on it on your iPad. Files you delete from your iCloud Drive can be recovered for up to 30 days; after that, they’re permanently deleted. Backing up your ebooks from Books isn’t immediately apparent If you’re a voracious reader of ebooks, and have hundreds of them in your Books app library (including some from other sources), you may well want to back them up to external storage – so that you don’t lose them, and also perhaps to free up some space on your Mac’s internal drive. Notifications are either useful or a distraction depending on which are being delivered or the time they’re coming in. You could have a video doorbell notification alerting you of a potential intruder one day and a video doorbell notification going off every minute because you’re going in and out of the door to work on the garden. But with strong management and a good choice of settings, notifications can operate exactly as you’d want them to. Birdsong is one of the great joys of the great outdoors, but it’s not always easy to work out what kind of bird is singing: while some birds’ voices are well known there’s almost infinite variety in birdsong and calls. That’s where your iPhone can help. All you need to do is record the sound, and your birdsong app can tell you what you’re hearing and give you lots of interesting information about the bird. Unfortunately, it’s no secret that the Vision Pro headset hasn’t been the smash hit Apple was hoping for. In a bid to put things right, the company is now apparently working on two new models that will offer users a better overall experience. According to Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman, the first is a cheaper and more lightweight model that should address the two primary concerns of the current edition: price and weight. For those of us who own more than one Apple device (and these days, who doesn’t?), syncing apps such as Safari, Mail and Messages means you can use these apps on one device and pick up where you left off on another. This is dependent on your devices being logged into the same Apple Account, of course. Setting up Safari for syncing is easy. Game saves If you get to choose where you save a game, why not save it in iCloud? Artificial intelligence (AI) image generation is all the rage, and even Apple is getting in on the act with Apple Intelligence and the Image Playground app. But right now, we have to say there’s another, better option: Microsoft Copilot. Copilot is more capable than Image Playground, yet it’s just as simple to use. There’s no need for additional plug-ins or complicated settings, just open it up and start typing your prompts. iMac › From £1,299 › In October 2024, Apple updated its 24in iMac with the M4 chip, and the iMac now has the wonders of Apple Intelligence built in. You can choose between an 8-core CPU/8-core GPU at entry-level, or an 10-core CPU/10-core GPU on the mid-range and top-tier versions. The entry model now comes with 16GB of memory as standard, configurable to 24GB; the mid - and toptier versions are configurable to 24 or 32GB (32GB only available with 512GB or more of storage). On the surface, Pieoneer is a simple app, but it’s one that does its job extremely well. In a nutshell, it gives you a customisable, wheel-like pie menu to quickly launch and switch apps. There’s a shortcut to open a radial menu with buttons for your open apps, and one to flip between your favourite apps, too. It’s more than that, though, as you can also set up app-specific controls. Since it replaced MobileMe in 2013, iCloud has proved immensely popular. With iCloud, you can sync data across all your Apple devices, and access it through a web browser using the iCloud website, iCloud.com. An Apple Account comes with 5GB of free storage on your iCloud Drive, and you can buy more space with a monthly subscription. Remove unwanted devices from your Apple Account To remove a device from your Apple Account, maybe an iPhone you upgraded or a Mac that no longer works, go to account.apple.com and sign in. In the left column, click Devices. Click on a device you want to remove, and in the pop-up window, click ‘Remove from Account’. You can access your iCloud account, including its synced apps and iCloud Drive files, directly from the web using any web browser. The iTunes store isn’t as important as it used to be. These days, streaming services such as Apple Music and Apple TV+ have greatly reduced the need to buy digital media, but the online shop is still there on your iPhone and iPad, and its functionality is retained on a Mac, as part of the Music and TV apps. It’s common to feel overwhelmed by an overflowing email inbox so any help regaining control over your messages has to be worth considering. When iOS 18.2 arrived, assistance came in the form of a new feature that automatically sorts email messages into one of four categories. Now that function has come to macOS 15.4 (Sequoia) as well, and it should mean you don’t miss anything of importance amid a sea of spam. Don’t forget, as always, our winner may be different to yours depending on your needs. We think the Ultimate Ears Megaboom 4 is a solid if middling performer for the price, while Soundcore’s model is a great boombox if you’re off to party all day and night and it’s also attractively priced.
