I chalk up 40 years at Australian Camera magazine with this issue. I joined the company that started it – Iris Publishing – on 15 March 1982 as an editorial assistant, after answering a job ad for a trainee journalist that had appeared in The Sydney Morning Herald on 23 January. I’d graduated from Sydney Teachers College at the end of the previous year and, with no immediate prospect of getting a teaching job in the NSW state school system, I’d started looking around for something else. The Picture Breaking The Time by Turkish photographer Aytek Çetin, winner of The International Landscape Photographer Of The Year 2021. This image was one of a portfolio of four photographs – selected from around 4,500 entries – that won Aytek the title, and depicts the famous ‘fairy chimneys’ of the Cappadocia region in Turkey. NOW EASILY THE most extensive lens system for mirrorless cameras, Sony’s FE-mount line-up now numbers 66 models with the addition of the FE PZ 16-35mm f/4.0 G. It’s a compact and lightweight power zoom – Sony claims it’s the lightest in its class – which will primarily interest video shooters, but also has appeal for photographers. The PX 16-35mm weighs in at just 353g – so it’s 30% lighter than the existing Vario-Tessar ZA series model – and is just a fraction over 88mm in length. WINNER Exceptional wildlife photography by Jason Freeman, capturing this male Norwegian reindeer in the middle of a snow storm. The tight composition really emphasises the magnificence of the antlers, and the background is blurred enough not to be a distraction, but still gives the image context. Jason used a Nikon D600 with a 70-200mm f/4.0 zoom lens set at 135mm. HIGHLY COMMENDED Framing, reflections, colour, and composition all come together in this beautifully atmospheric sunset shot by Nicholas Vander Werf. The location is Lake Bonney Barmera in South Australia and Nicholas used a Samsung S9 smartphone. He emphasises that the image is straight out of the phone and has not been retouched. THE MICRO FOUR Thirds sensor format has had two big shots in the arm recently (an appropriate analogy just at the moment) with the arrival of the OM System OM-1 and the Panasonic Lumix GH6. Both introduce much-needed upgrades to the design of the M43 sensor that, if nothing else, might at least keep the naysayers quiet and allow everybody else to better consider the merits of the format. The Lumix GH6 is primarily designed for video-makers – an application to which the M43 sensor is ideally suited – but the OM-1 is definitely for photographers with an emphasis on the sports, action, adventure and wildlife fields, i.e.the great outdoors. The challenges faced by Kodak during photography’s transition from film to digital have been well documented, but often inaccurately. Before we go back to the beginning and look at the foundations that were laid for what became film photography’s most successful brand for close to a century, it’s worth making a few points about the more recent past. For starters, Kodak did not fail because it couldn’t adapt to digital imaging. On the contrary, the company – which had one of the best R&D operations in the world – was at the leading edge of most of the key developments in digital imaging, including creating what is now recognised as the first ‘filmless’ camera in 1975.
