The European Commission (EC) has revealed a rule proposal that would force all smartphones sold in the EU to use USB-C chargers. The EC’s proposal states this would cut down on waste by enabling customers to reuse old chargers when they buy a new device. However, Apple has struck back, saying it would harm innovation by forcing manufacturers into a single standard and prevent higher-quality alternatives from being developed. Apple is not the only company that would be affected. According to an EC study from 2019, around half of all mobile phone chargers sold in the EU in 2018 used USB Micro-B connectors, 29% had USB-C connectors, while 21% were Lightning-equipped iPhones. Apple’s Mail app is often overlooked in favour of alternative email clients that appear to offer more in the way of features. However, it’s a very capable and easy-to-use tool and offers many advantages, particularly if you have multiple Apple devices and synchronise them using iCloud. What’s more, it’s had a couple of decent upgrades in recent versions of macOS, many of them focused on privacy. Sign in with Apple enables you to sign up to an email newsletter or enter a competition using a random email address that is forwarded to your iCloud email account. Apple launched its next-gen iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch models at its ‘California Streaming’ event on 14 September, with Tim Cook and other Apple execs unveiling its wares to the world. The last few years of macOS upgrades brought trauma with their advances. We’ve lost 32-bit apps, gained a new file system ideal for SSDs and Time Machine backups but unsuited to hard disks, and previously simple startup volumes have been split to lock the System away in a snapshot. Monterey is a welcome chance to get your breath back. On Intel Macs at least it makes no deep changes, and even Time Machine will back it up in continuity with existing Big Sur backups. Starting up from external disks with M1 Monterey changes the way to set Secure Boot policy for bootable external disks on M1 Macs. To drop from Full Security, you have to start up from the external disk, shut down, then start up in Recovery mode by holding the Power button. That takes you into the Recovery system on that external disk, where you can change its policy using Startup Security Utility. When started up from the Recovery system on the internal SSD, you can only set policy for that disk, not external disks. While many of us expected a flat-edged Apple Watch to take to the stage at Apple’s September event, the company surprised everyone with a totally different design. Instead of an iPhone-like right-angled chassis with flat sides, the Apple Watch Series 7 actually has a more rounded shape than the Series 6. That softer design is paired with a screen that is 70% brighter with your wrist down, so surreptitiously checking the time should be less of a strain on your eyes. If you’ve been holding out for a new MacBook Air, you might have to wait a little longer. Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who has a good track record when it comes to Apple’s future plans, has claimed the company will release a freshly redesigned MacBook Air in the third quarter of 2022, from early July to late September. That’s a new estimate on the shipping date, and later than was initially predicted. Kuo had previously asserted that the new MacBook Air would splash down around the middle of 2022. The App Store opened on 10 July, 2008, with just 500 apps available, including The New York Times, eBay and Travelocity. It has since transformed over the years and expanded to become core to Apple’s entire business. FaceTime FaceTime on the web lets others access individual or group calls via their Chrome or Edge web browser without needing Apple hardware to participate, and you can send anyone invitations using web links. Those links and Calendar events ensure that everyone knows when to meet next. For group calls, tile up to 18 callers into a single grid view. Optical character recognition (OCR) isn’t new technology, although Live Text is impressively good at it even when working from cursive, handwritten or distorted text. What’s new with Monterey is that Live Text will perform its OCR trick on any text displayed in images; it’s so quick that it’s interactive on M1 Macs; and it links through Look Up, thanks to Siri’s search. It currently works with standard image formats like JPEG, PNG and HEIF in Preview, Photos, Screenshot and Safari, and when the image is previewed using Quick Look. Recovery mode on M1 Macs has changed, although most won’t notice too much. Press and hold the Power button and Big Sur starts your M1 Mac up from the dedicated Recovery container on its internal SSD, regardless of whether it has just been running from an external disk. That remains true when it has been running Big Sur, but if it has just been using Monterey, the Recovery system will be that in a Recovery volume on the last boot disk, not the internal SSD. Say your Mac has macOS 12.2 installed on an external disk, and 12.1 on its internal SSD.
