“I always keep my eyes on Indo and especially Nias, because it really holds a swell,” says South Africa’s foremost big wave barrel hunter, Matt Bromley on the other end of the line – with his feet up in his man cave, we imagine, surrounded by an armoury of spears and swords that he uses to slice his way through the bellies of his ocean prey. It’s also the day of his 27th birthday. “The bigger the better.” He cackles.
Asked to elaborate, Matt reckons that “a lot of the places in Indo max out when the waves get big, but it’s so deep off the back and in the channel that it's just the bigger the better at Nias.”
