There are currently over 2,600 designated National Historic Landmarks (NHL) in the United States. The list includes landmark districts, buildings, sites, structures, and even objects that contributed to the history, architecture, archeology, technology, and culture of the nation. Some are iconic American places, like the Alamo and Washington’s Headquarters at Valley Forge, but others are lesser known but no less influential, such as Sequoyah’s Cabin in Oklahoma, where Sequoyah developed a written language for the Cherokee, and Rowan Oak in Mississippi, the home of celebrated Southern author William Faulkner.
