The Prolific Designer With 14 books, 15 fabric collections, and a hefty teaching and travelling schedule, Nancy estimates that she has made 500-600 quilts to date. Her first published quilt pattern in a magazine was in Quilters Newsletter in 1996. Since then, she has published 240 quilt patterns in magazines. Quilt Artist If you were lucky enough to attend Houston’s International Quilt Festival last fall, you may have been fortunate to see one of Claudia’s elaborate award-winning quilts on display. Perhaps you were even able to take a class with her. Claudia’s quilts ooze with techniques. Garden of the Gods is a perfect example—pieced diamonds, appliquéd organza, couching, beautiful quilting. Sharing the love of quilting When you talk to Linda Nitzen about quilting, her passion flows forth, practically oozing out of her pores. A natural teacher, she shares ideas with abandon. It quickly becomes apparent that she simply wants to inspire those around her to quilt. I grew up in Cincinnati, OH and currently live in Littleton, CO. I have a Bachelor of Science degree in Graphic Design from the University of Cincinnati. The program was 5 years with a work/study component - that's how I ended up in Colorado. I worked for a Denver company while I was in school and they offered me a job after graduation. I moved two weeks after graduation and haven't looked back! I moved on to freelance graphic design for several years when my son, Spencer, was young. The year was 1996 and Quiltmaker Magazine was celebrating its 50th issue. Such a momentous occasion was being marked with a huge contest—“QM’s $10,000 Let’s Celebrate! Quilt Challenge”— with a grand prize of a Pfaff sewing machine. The trend that year was combining piecing and appliqué, and several of the winning designs featured that combination of techniques. The quilt Appalachian Trail by Patricia Gabriel won Judge’s Choice, and it was featured in the 50th issue (July/August 1996) and again in the book Quiltmaker’s Fancy (C&T Publications, 2007). Blossom Time Nothing shouts spring like the first sign of bulbs coming up. This is such a joyous time! I love making these little tulip blocks from patches I have on hand in my Scrap User's System. Refer to the “Triangle-Squares” technique in Basic Lessons and use the white and purple A’s to make 2 unit 1’s. Similarly, use white and green A’s to make 2 unit 2’s. Bitty Boo My 4 year old son saw the Sept/Oct ‘18 issue of Quiltmaker in the grocery store and said that I HAD to make him the quilt on the cover. It was our first Halloween in our new house and I thought it would be a great quilt to commemorate it. Candle Mat. I used only the star portion of this pattern to make a reversible candle mat. I made 2 stars using two different lines of fabric. Getting Started About our Patterns We recommend that you read all of the instructions before starting a project and that you cut and sew one block before cutting all of your fabric. Using a rotary cutter, mat and an acrylic ruler, cut the shape to the size indicated in the cutting list. Pressing tabs indicate the direction to press the seam allowances. Our patterns list finished block sizes, which are typically ½" smaller than unfinished block sizes because they do not include seam allowances.
