We’re told that we ‘make our own luck’, but despite my efforts over the years – working hard, saving, being good to others, giving to charities – I find that I haven’t had much luck at all. Although I’m educated, well-mannered, and hard working, at 50 years old I find myself in the position of being single, poor, disabled, without property, I’ve lost several family members, I’m unemployed, and I have few close friends. Meanwhile I see others around me who – in my eyes, at least – are behaving badly, immorally, and without regard for others or even at times the law, but have had a lot of luck: they have wealth, property, friends, family, work, opportunities, and fun.
