I am one of the lucky ones: I recently attended QuiltCon West in Pasadena, California. For three days, I was immersed in the quirky and colorful world of “my peeps” as we all wandered the show, emptied our wallets with the vendors, attended lectures, participated in workshops, and connected with fellow modern quilters. As you can imagine, the show was outstanding. More than 350 quilts were on display in the juried exhibit alone. Many of the showstoppers looked familiar—and for good reason. I’d liked them on Instagram, commented on their progress on Facebook, or even seen them in person while editing QuiltCon magazine. One of the most fascinating—and challenging!—aspects of working with color is that we never see any color on its own. While scientists are not exactly clear why, it is a fact that the perception we have of each color—in other words, what we think we see—is determined by the other colors around it. Our eyes and brains don’t separate a color from its surroundings. Of course we are quilters and fabric is our medium, but the same is true for everything we see. For every quilt we make, the effect of each fabric we select is determined by how it relates to the other fabrics used. Let’s take a look at the role color plays in that equation. “I start with a blank canvas; a bolt of muslin, fabric dyes, and the primary colors in silkscreen paints...” That is how it begins for many surface designers—just the bare essentials of fabric and color—but the results are unique to the individual in charge of the process. For artist Marcia Derse, these materials provide her with a means of building a vocabulary of color with a line of commercial fabric for Windham Fabrics resembling hand-dyes. With a background in letterpress printing, typography, and an interest in altered books, patterning cloth is another way she can add to the visual language of fabric.
