There’s nothing like a rainy summer weekend to get me in the studio. When the sun is shining, I have a laundry list of excuses, and most of them have something to do with getting outside and basking in the glorious sunshine. It is very hard to stay focused on indoor tasks with the siren call of my flower and vegetable gardens or the pleading looks from my boys who are itching to go to the beach. It seems to take a good thunderstorm for me to get anything done indoors. 1. When in doubt, re-thread the machine—both the top thread and bobbin. Of course, you might be thinking, I know how to thread my machine. That can’t be the problem. Well, sometimes it is. Thread can get jostled out of its guide or a poorly threaded bobbin can cause erratic stitches. Before protesting too loudly, just rethread your machine. 2. Change your needle often. Experts differ on how often is “often.” But they all agree that waiting until a needle breaks before putting in a new one is not often enough! We know that English paper pieced (EPP) quilts have been around almost 300 years. The 1718 Silk Patchwork Coverlet, the oldest dated quilt stitched in England, was made over papers using a technique that is essentially the same as we use today. According to the Illinois State Museum, the earliest hexagon template that researchers have found is from 1770s England. I made a little EPP quilt when I was in high school in the 1970s. Constructed from scraps left over from garment sewing, it was not a thing of great beauty and met an ignominious end. I am happy to report that I’ve come a long way since then! Paper piecing is a great technique for accurately creating blocks with irregular angles. If you’ve never tried this, gather some fabric and make a sample block to familiarize yourself with the process. It’s fun—and another useful skill for your quilting journey. TIP ONE: Fabric is always placed on the side of the paper without the printed letters (or numbers), with the wrong side of the fabric against the blank side of the paper. TIP TWO: All sewing is done with printed side of the paper on top. TIP THREE: Reduce the stitch length to 1.5mm. It makes it easier to remove the paper at the end. But Kristy almost didn’t enter “Holy Sh*t Sherlock” into QuiltCon 2015, because she wasn’t sure it was modern. The Sherlock quilt was actually the second pixel portrait of a pop culture icon Kristy had made. Before that, she had completed a Doctor Who quilt (see page 14). I often use zippers in my pillow backings to make the forms removable, allowing me to replace flattened forms quickly and keep the pillow looking full. To craft a backing with a lapped (covered) zipper, begin with a polyester zipper at least the length or width of the pillow. For example, if your pillow measures 18" square, you need an 18" or longer zipper. Trimming a zipper is as simple as cutting off any unneeded length; when trimming, be sure to keep the zipper pull within the boundaries of the project so it isn’t accidentally cut off and discarded. ■ What does it mean in cutting instructions to use Template X and Template X reversed—or often simply X and XR? ■ In many quilt patterns, the same shape is needed, but in a mirror image of itself—much like having a right hand and a left hand. To reverse a template, turn it over and use the “wrong side” of the template as the top, or cut a separate template for the reverse pieces. ■ If the template is symmetrical, such as a square or a diamond, it won’t require a reverse template as it is exactly the same from either side. Paper piecing (also called foundation piecing) is not to be confused with English paper piecing. Foundation paper piecing gets its name because the fabric is actually stitched to paper. (In English paper piecing, the fabric is stitched around a paper shape.) Two key things to remember: 1. The wrong side of the fabric is placed on the side of the paper without the printed numbers. 2. The fabric/paper set is then fl ipped over and the unit is actually stitched on the printed lines. The paper will be on top with the fabric beneath. Okay, here’s a third thing.
