A record 94,722 petabytes (PB) of broadband data was used in the UK in 2023, a rise of nine per cent from 2022.
The figure comes from Openreach, which manages the cable network that most providers use to supply internet access to customers.
One petabyte is equal to 1,000 terabytes (TB) or 1,000,000 gigabytes (GB). To put the figure into context, Openreach said that on average streaming a 4K video uses about 7.2GB an hour.
December was the busiest month for broadband use (8,944 PB), followed by November (8,289PB) and October (8,251PB).
The busiest day was Boxing Day (342PB), driven by families watching films at home and football fans streaming live matches on Amazon Prime.
June had the lowest use of any month, with 7,279PB.
