Compiling The Annual each year is without a doubt both my most and least favourite endeavour. Each year, we invite professional, emerging, and student photographers from Australia and around the world to make submissions of their six strongest images created over the preceding 12 months. As usual, the work was strong, making the task of reducing thousands of images down to the ones you see in this very special edition as challenging as always. Photographers are renowned for being a little lax with deadlines, and every year dozens fail to get their submissions in on time. Thankfully, here at Capture we don’t mind extending the odd deadline as long as the appropriate late fee is paid. Searching for a style The trend in style, noted in 2015, that embraces a more ‘authentic’ type of image for advertising campaigns shows no signs of abating. Scott Dettrick, a senior creative at The Monkeys agency, in Sydney, explains this style in terms of the number of images consumers are exposed to on social media. “The average person now sees so many images every day,” he says. “If an image feels fake, it tends to get rejected. People like to feel the image depicts a real experience.” San Francisco-based photographer Leigh Beisch agrees. “What I’m seeing in the US market is that it’s about photography looking more authentic,” she says. Among shifting trends to darker and moodier imagery, new gear with more than enough megapixels, and photographers going viral on social media, there is no doubt that the wedding and portrait industry has become even more saturated during 2016. An online search for wedding or portrait photographers brings up hundreds of thousands of ‘professionals’ offering their services for free, or next to nothing. While the culture of photographers undercutting is nothing new, it is a culture unknown to clients. Ever since smartphones allowed the masses to take selfies and ruin every shot you took of the bride and her father walking down the aisle, an idea has entered our collective consciousness: photos are free. The market Oversaturation of the market shows no sign of abating. Greater demand for additional content with photographers expected to produce video as well. Strong approach taken by clients to try and drive down photography costs. Continued growth and popularity of aerial photography. Agencies are moving a majority of their productions in-house. Photographers are expected to provide images for social media in addition to original brief. Clients commissioning imagery for social media advertising. Far more professionals are pushing workshops and seminars as part of their business model. Instagrammers with large followings are being commissioned to shoot campaigns regardless of their professional experience. Why Do We Calibrate? There are many reasons for calibrating a monitor for editing your photographs: • To more accurately display your image on a single screen or across multiple monitors; • To adhere to ISO standards, codes of practice, and workflow protocols; • To match the screen image to its printed image; • We also regularly re-calibrate to ensure the monitor’s brightness, colour temperature, and tonal rendering remains unchanged over time. Hardware Calibration All ColorEdge monitors contain a special graphics chip (ASIC) that has been designed and patented by EIZO. The ASIC is the ‘brains’ of the monitor, containing an enormous 16-bit look-up table, or a 278 trillion colour palette. Photojournalism in 2016 could perhaps be summed up by one image made this year. The dazed expression of 5-year-old Omran Daqneesh sitting in the back of an ambulance after an airstrike in Aleppo, Syria stands at once as a symbol of our growing inurement to war, but the images of the boy that captured hearts around the world also re-validated the power of the photograph in what seems like a sea of conflict images. Equally significant to the photographic ethos was World Press Photo’s inaugural State of News Photography report that revealed a swath of discrepancies in ethical practice along with several issues of underrepresentation. The launch of Instagram Stories and its swift addition to the news media’s quiver of dissemination methods saw a new paradigm for real-time storytelling. And…
