A new electric-powered boatspeed record was set at the 34th Annual Lake of the Ozarks Shootout last August, breaking a record once held by our own Randy Vance in partnership with Torqeedo (boatingmag.com/electric speedrecord). Shaun Torrente crossed the finish line at 104 mph in the Vision 32 catamaran powered by two custom-built Vision Marine electric outboards. After repowering my twin-outboard 29-foot boat, I was dying to get back on the water—so much so that I ignored common sense and went out to the local river, which was running high and fast. The good news was that my repower worked fine and the boat ran well. The bad part: Swift current plus a large boat equaled disaster. It took no less than a dozen attempts to get the boat remotely close to the trailer at the end of the day. The surging current would sweep it downriver past the trailer. I suggest the following procedures be included in an outboard owner’s maintenance routine and that boaters also familiarize themselves with the procedure for adding fluid to the trim-and-tilt system. —Rick Shackleton GREASED RAMS So simple: Squeeze some grease on your fingertips and apply a healthy dollop to the tips of the trim rams.
