It’s March, a time when many boaters begin looking toward the year ahead: the ports and harbors, the big fish, the big smiles. Such thoughts pervade as we pull the tarp, check the trailer tires or dewinterize the engines. One of my spring rituals consists of heading out to purchase safety gear to replace that which might have expired; as when purchasing milk, always check the date stamped on flares before you pay for them, and reach into the back of the rack if needed in order to get maximum value. I’m sure most of you have your own “Things that Must Be Done” lists. Ticking items off such a list well in advance of truly needing them makes great organizational sense. But I enjoy buying flares, new life jackets…

ON BOARD WITH… CAPTAIN’S TEST FOR COMPARISON’S SAKE FIRST IMPRESSION GEAR HEAD ON BOARD WITH… How long have you worked with TowBoatUS? I purchased my first TowBoatUS location on Georgia’s Lake Allatoona in 2019. How did you get into training first responders? When I was a young narcotics officer, my captain focused on training every day. He would always say you’re only going to be as good as you train. I have carried that mindset with me throughout my career and into TowBoatUS. You also train high-schoolers in boating safety? Yes, for the past couple of years we have teamed up with the BoatU.S. Foundation for Boating Safety and Clean Water and the National Safe Boating Council…
With spring and the new season just about here, it’s time to get the boat ready. Too often, many overlook the propeller(s). After all, they’re a vital part of the transmission of your boat; together with the gear case, they convert the engine’s energy into propulsion and movement. This Captain’s Test will help you get yours ready for 2022. 1. When you put your boat away for the season, you noticed that the blades on your propeller were rough and wrinkled. How did that happen, and what should you do about it? A. You most likely dragged the gear case over some bottom obstruction, and the propeller blades suffered some minor damage. Remove your prop and have a good propeller shop repair it before you launch for the season. B.…
If you boat, you expose your skin to a lot of sun, end of story. To protect your skin from sun damage and reduce the risk of skin cancer, you should protect yourself with the proper clothing and sunscreen. For clothing, look for a high UPF rating, which measures the amount of UV rays the material blocks from your skin. For sunscreen, the SPF rating refers to the amount of time it takes for UV-exposed skin to burn. SPF 15 means you’re protected 15 times longer than you would be with nothing. Here are three types of sun protection to choose from. Solace Boats’ 32 CS promises to provide a boat for all reasons. Featuring a double-stepped hull, the 32 CS should deliver the performance and attention to detail we’ve noted aboard other Solace boats. For example, its construction features a high-tech laminate of epoxy, carbon fiber and Innegra, which is vacuum-infused and post-cured. This combines light weight, strength and stiffness, enhancing the ride and efficiency. Hardware is chrome-plated, wiring is tinned copper, and even the fuel tank is coated with coal tar epoxy to resist corrosion. Boat buyers can choose from either twin Yamaha 300 or twin Mercury or Mercury Racing outboards up to 900 hp total to power the Solace Boats 32 CS. Twin 30-gallon livewells and multiple in-sole fish boxes represent some fishing highlights, while wraparound bow seating with…
