Have you ever inspired someone close to you to start beading? My mom is one person in my life who has taken a while to get hooked on beading. But recently, I taught her to do a beadwoven project by Jill Wiseman. She saw that my sevenyear-old daughter was able to make the project and thought, “If she can do it, so can I!” She has made several versions of that project and even started making other projects. Like many beaders, Noreen Morton was inspired by someone close to her—her mother. In the 1950s, Noreen’s mother, Tootsie, made some miniature beaded furniture from size 11° seed beads threaded on wire. Noreen admired the little sofa, chairs, and ottoman for many years, until she unexpectedly came across them in her mother’s kitchen trash can in the mid-1990s. Her mother was downsizing, but of course Noreen couldn’t bear to see the cute miniature furniture go out with the trash. She retrieved the pieces and straightened the wire, and she has continued to admire her mom’s handiwork for the past twenty years. Diamond weave, named after the shape of the technique’s building blocks, was developed by Gerlinde Lenz. While challenging herself to join pearls in rows and columns and form smooth edges without allowing thread to show, Gerlinde discovered this intriguing technique that uses whole diamonds of beads as building blocks and rows of stitches to stabilize the diamonds. Gerlinde considers diamond weave a “sophisticated sister” to herringbone stitch, yet it superficially also resembles a tilted swatch of right-angle weave. To share this exciting new technique with the beading community, she partnered with designer, photographer, illustrator, and writer Cath Thomas to produce their new self-published book, Diamond Weave.
