The new year calls on us to hang a new calendar and embrace new challenges. One item to mark on your to-do list is the deadline for BeadDreams: April 8, 2019. Yes, it’s time to submit to this annual competition for bead artists. We know you’ve been working hard to create gorgeous pieces, and we can’t wait to see them. Purple Peyote Pop Bottle This is a vintage bottle, salvaged from a local beach after a winter storm. I covered the bottle with microfiber, then stitched round after round of peyote until the entire bottle was covered. I did not use a pattern; I just improvised as I went along. I only used beads from my stash to create the ultimate recycling project. This piece epitomizes everything that I love about bead weaving: making something beautiful from found objects and leftovers. When picking up the Vexolo beads, pull the thread straight through the hole to avoid putting extra wear on the thread. BAND 1) On 1 yd. Working in flat evencount peyote and ending and adding thread as needed, stitch a six-bead wide band to the desired length, making sure the number of cubes on each edge of the base is divisible by four. Allow 1 ⁄2 in. (1.3 cm) for the clasp. Work four more rows so there are two additional cubes on each edge. Note: Eight rows (or four rows on each edge) equals 1 ⁄2 in. (1.3 cm). “We all need to bring more beauty into this world, and we all have a gift to share.” “I’m not that great of a bead artist,” says Heidi Kummli humbly. “I really only use two or three bead embroidery stitches and two sizes of beads. Most of my newer work has less bead embroidery and more focus on the components. I like creating a three-dimensional look and making really interesting focal points pop out.” The irony of Kummli’s words is obvious when viewing her finished work (above). Crafting Perception Q I’d like to sell my bead-work at craft fairs and local shops, but I worry that buyers undervalue handmade jewelry. How do I enhance the perceived value? A When you make jewelry to sell, little else is as frustrating as having a customer admire your beadwork and hear their shopping companion say, “I could make that for you,” or “You could make that yourself.” Some customers equate “handmade” with easy-to-make, so it is important that everything about your jewelry — from the beads to the display — be as professional as possible. Here are some tips: • Use the highest quality materials in your jewelry that you can afford. • Carefully check your stitching for consistent tension, secure connections, and no thread showing. • If you use…

Using scissors or a utility knife, cut the inside of the template out. 2) Find an image that you would like to use (see “Online images,” p. 25, for guidance about doing so ethically), and print it out on a piece of Hammermill paper. You may need to adjust the size of the image so it fits within the template. Must-haves Needles It all starts here — every project needs the right needle. My go-to is Tulip size 11, but everybody has a personal preference. Basic pliers Stitchers should have chainnose and roundnose pliers on hand. Opt for a quality set with these two styles, plus an optional pair of flatnose or bentnose pliers.
