Google blocked 2.28 million risky and malicious Android apps from its Play Store last year, an increase from 1.5 million in 2022.
It also blocked 333,000 accounts that offered apps containing malware or repeatedly broke its policy, and a further 200,000 that asked for unnecessary permissions from users, such as reading their text messages or accessing their location.
Google claimed that investment in new tools to detect threats allowed it to spot more dodgy apps, as part of its ‘SAFE’ principles: Safeguard Users, Advocate for Developer Protection, Foster Responsible Innovation, Evolve Platform Defenses (see www.snipca.com/50361).
It also uses a “more stringent” process for verifying the identity of app developers, and has started to indicate certain types of apps that have been independently verified as safe.
