What was it?
Announced by Bill Gates in 2003, these digital watches could receive news and messages wirelessly. Although watch makers Citizen, Fossil and Suunto were on board, customers had to wait a year until the first ones appeared, in January 2004. In October, Swatch joined the platform with its Paparazzi model (pictured).
Why did it die?
The Paparazzi cost $150, (around £100, had it gone on sale in the UK, equivalent to £150 today). Prices ranged up to $725 for a Tissot model. On top of this, MSN Direct required a $59 annual subscription, and rather than using mobile networks, Microsoft broadcast data over FM radio.
