AirPods Pro 3 might have only just come out, but Apple is already gearing up for the next iteration. That’s because according to Mark Gurman, work has commenced on AirPods Pro 4, AirPods 5, and an H3 chip that will power many of these devices’ features. Starting with AirPods 5, Gurman says he doesn’t expect them to get the AirPods Pro 3’s heart-rate monitoring. That said, Gurman added that Apple is looking to work in “several more health features to the AirPods over time, including a temperature reader”. In previous versions of the Camera app, you could simultaneously see a wider spread of mode labels (such as Video, Portrait, Spatial, and Pano) spreading out below the Shutter button. iOS 26 streamlines the Camera interface by only displaying the two most useful modes – Photo and Video – by default. To access more hidden shooting modes, such as Spatial or Pano, simply swipe left to reveal them on the lozenge-shaped Liquid Glass button. Apple has resisted the idea of a touchscreen MacBook since the days of Steve Jobs, but things could be seismically changing, if a new report is correct. According to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple will incorporate a touch panel into its upcoming OLED MacBook Pro, which is slated to go into mass production in late 2026. Set permissions for sharing Q We share files between our Macs using sparse bundles on our NAS, but when anyone creates new files or folders their permissions have to be changed manually to allow others to write to them. How can we make that easier? by TODD BROOKS A Default permissions set for all new files and folders created by a user are governed by their Mac’s umask. Its standard setting in macOS is to give that user read and write access, and their group and everyone read-only access. To change that to give their group read and write access, you need to change the default umask for that Mac. When it comes to the two USB 3.2 drives on test, the Kingston XS1000R is the cheapest at £136, but also the slowest, while the Seagate Ultra Compact is the smallest, but is also relatively slow. While USB 3.2 transfers data fairly quickly on a modern Mac, it is possible to improve on the speeds. The USB4 drives – from Sandisk and Corsair – are fast, but more expensive per gigabyte than the USB 3.2 drives and larger too. While macOS 26 (Tahoe) hasn’t revolutionised it, the update has certainly spruced things up with tweaks and new features that bring an extra level of control to your Mac. Although they’re more fiddly to create and fragile in use, they can have advantages over macOS 26 (Tahoe)’s new custom folders. This month, Apple upgraded its Apple Vision Pro headset to the new M5 chip, visionOS 26 operating system, and added a new, more comfortable Dual Knit Band. By upgrading the Vision Pro to the latest Apple silicon chip, the company is clearly sending a message that it isn’t done with its spatial computing headset yet, but I’m left wondering, why not?
