We’re all painfully aware that Apple’s Siri upgrade powered by Apple Intelligence has been struggling. The company has admitted as much itself – with the virtual assistant’s AI overhaul being delayed from its planned launch date. It does now seem like the end could be in sight. That’s according to Mark Gurman, at least, who says that Apple is eyeing a spring 2026 launch date for the new version of Siri. The toolbars in Finder and many of the apps built into macOS, offer plenty of useful options, but they also have a good number you may never use and some stark omissions. Think of the Touch Bar, featured on certain MacBook models from 2016 to 2022, which changed its display and functionality depending on the context. Now imagine a similar concept applied to the keyboard itself, with each physical key having an LED-lit mini display that can change to show different letters and symbols. That’s what may be coming our way in the future, as revealed in a recently filed Apple US patent application (US-12283442-B2). The very first computer password is older than Apple; it was created in 1961 by American computer scientist Fernando Corbato. Corbato needed to give each user of a shared computer private access. So he used a technique that dates back to at least Roman times. Passwords are believed to have been invented by the Roman military: they would engrave a ‘watchword’ on a wooden tablet, and if you didn’t know that day’s watchword, the night guards wouldn’t let you pass. One of the downsides of technology is that if it’s possible to use it for crime, a bad actor will find a way to do just that. And that’s what’s happened to Apple Pay and similar services from other tech firms. When you buy things with Apple Pay there isn’t the same payment limit that there is on contactless bank cards. More rumours are circulating over the possibility of Apple’s two AI-enabled tabletop hubs designed to level up the smart home. In a recent report, Mark Gurman said the first one could arrive this year. The more modest device – which should feature a smart screen fixed to a speaker – has allegedly been delayed “due to problems with Siri” but should arrive “by the end of this year”. The more advanced version, which comes with a display attached to a robotic arm and a “unique AI personality” is set to be unveiled “a year or two later”. Ever wondered what the future holds for Jony Ive since his 2019 departure from Apple? Well, we seem to have found our answer, as it’s been announced that the design guru has teamed up with OpenAI to make some sort of AI device in the near future. Specifically, OpenAI has bought io, Ive’s AI hardware startup, for around $6.5 billion (about £4.8 billion). Ive and OpenAI chief Sam Altman have reportedly been working together for about two years, with Altman commenting, “I think we have the opportunity here to kind of completely reimagine what it means to use a computer.” We don’t know exactly what will result from this collaboration, although we can supposedly expect a family of AI products. The name of the new release of macOS is usually a closely guarded secret, but this year, it was widely leaked. As usual, it’s a geographic feature in California. macOS 26 is to be called Tahoe, after a lake on the border of California and Nevada. According to Apple’s Craig Federighi, it’s a “Breathtaking spot where crystal clear waters meet majestic mountain peaks.” This is certainly reflected in the default wallpaper, which is a beautiful blue design. macOS Tahoe is compatible with all Apple silicon Macs and a handful of Intel models, namely the 2019 Mac Pro and 16-inch MacBook Pro, and the 2020 13-inch MacBook Pro and iMac. The next release of iPadOS brings a slew of new features that bring a more Mac-like experience to the tablet. In fact, if you get yourself a Magic Keyboard or third-party keyboard with a built-in trackpad, you could even replace your Mac notebook with an iPad. To run iPadOS 26, your iPad must have an Apple A12 chip or newer (M-series chips are newer). For Apple Intelligence, your iPad needs an Apple M1 or Apple A17 Pro chip or newer. Extensions give Safari on Mac superpowers; they add a host of extra features ranging from changing how websites work to offering extra search engines, storing your passwords or offering instant language translation. Finding and installing extensions couldn’t be easier – in Safari, go to Safari > Safari Extensions in the menu bar – and you can configure them, disable them or uninstall them in Safari > Settings > Extensions. You can choose between an 8-core CPU/8-core GPU at entry-level, or an 10-core CPU/10-core GPU on the mid-range and top-tier versions. Apple will celebrate the iPhone’s 20th anniversary when the ‘iPhone 19’ launches in 2027, and already we’ve seen plenty of leaks and rumours supposedly leaking out of Apple’s top-secret labs and onto the web. While we can’t know for sure what’s coming our way, we can at least round up what’s been reported so far to see what we make of it. Apple’s macOS 26 (Tahoe) update has added clipboard history, but it’s a pretty basic implementation compared to some third-party alternatives. If you find yourself craving a little more control over your past clipboard entries, try Paste 5. This clipboard manager is the perfect tool for power users. Instead of a Spotlight-style list of text and files, Paste uses a toolbar at the bottom of your Mac. This offers visual previews of each item, making it absolute child’s play to find what you’re after. You can search for items, organise them into groups, pin frequently used files, set up shared clipboards with colleagues (new in version 5), and even work automatically with Shortcuts integration. Maps on your iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch can help you get from A to Z more easily, but there’s a whole lot more to it than that. Fire up the app on your Mac and, yes, you can work out how to drive, walk, cycle or take public transport from one place to another. One of our favourite GarageBand features is the Beat Sequencer, which enables you to create your own drum and percussion patterns even if you’ve never hit a hi-hat or smacked a snare drum before. As we’ll discover in this tutorial, it’s incredibly easy to use, but it’s also a very powerful creative tool. The Beat Sequencer enables you to create very complex patterns, and it’s very simple to then incorporate multiple Beat Sequencer patterns in your song and to tweak the patterns to keep things musically interesting. Apple has made some important changes to the way it manages passwords – most obviously by creating an entire new app, called Passwords, which launched in iOS 18 and macOS 15 (Sequoia). That’s good because it means passwords are stored in the same way and in the same place across your iPhone, iPad and Mac, instead of putting them in Safari’s preferences here and iCloud settings there. It’s also a lot more user-friendly. The Passwords app does several things. It pops up when you’re asked to create a password for a website or app; it stores those passwords and makes it easy to access them when required; and it warns you of any security dangers, such as if one of your passwords has been included in a website data leak.…
