Swiping up from the bottom of an iPad or iPhone opens the Control Center, which has a brightness slider. Moving this to the left (or down in iOS 11) reduces the backlight intensity but, even at the lowest setting, it can seem quite dazzling in the dark. Tweaking a few accessibility settings creates a shortcut that lets you reduce the brightness below Apple’s apparent minimum, making your screen easier to read when it’s dark.
First, open Settings, then tap General followed by Accessibility. Tap Zoom, switch it on, and a magnifying-glass icon will appear. Now, with three fingers, perform a triple-tap on the screen to access a hidden menu. Here, tap Full Screen Zoom. Next, on the same menu, tap Choose Filter followed by Low Light (see screenshot).
