Why? The war in Ukraine was American photojournalist Wolfgang Schwan’s first experience covering a war. “I wanted to know more about the war in Donbas for my own education,” Schwan says. He had been following the situation there since 2015. When a new flare up was imminent, Schwan made the trip. He spent two months in Donbas before the war reached there, talking to Ukrainian soldiers and photographing their everyday lives. “I wanted to educate myself as much as I could, to better understand what brought so many young men to the far side of their country to fight in a very cold war in trenches. WHAT THE JUDGES THOUGHT I have never seen an image like this before! The decisive moment of the capture where the two birds appear to be communicating with each other is priceless and with humour. The image quality is superb allowing a wonderful tonal separation of both birds from the busy sky. Added this is a perfect focus depth and an appropriate shutter speed that allows just the slightest movement in the gull’s tail feathers. WHAT THE JUDGES THOUGHT This was one of the most captivating images from this year’s Mono Awards. Made from multiple captures using various focal lengths and perspectives, this photograph could easily have been just another staid photograph of an old Italian village, but instead the photographer has used considerable skill to add some wonderful complexity to this scene. While some will revel in unravelling the layers of this photograph, others will simply enjoy exploring the minute tableaus – a bicycle outside a cafe, tourists wandering a laneway, stairs winding up a bell tower, or just an old crow flying by. Roger Ballen Most people find taking a black and white image very difficult. I bought my first camera, a Mamiya, when I was thirteen. By that stage, in the early 1960s, my mother had been working for Magnum for some years. Through her conversation, and particularly her collecting, I was exposed to the work of many photographers – some of them now considered historically important. In this milieu, there was a complete belief in the value of photography, particularly in its ability to capture and convey meaning in a socio-documentary context. Reuben Wu is relatively new to NFTs. He became aware of them in December last year and released his first NFT in March this year. His Genesis artwork sold for 30 Ethereum (approx. US$81,000) in mid-March. “I’m drawn to big ideas, especially big ideas which are very nascent and changing as we interact with them.
