AS PART of the commemorations, the 1860 Heritage Centre, an agency museum of the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Sports, Arts and Culture, will host the 1860 memorial lecture to begin the 165th commemoration of the indentured workers’ arrival in South Africa, on Saturday, November 15, at 1.30pm at the 1860 Heritage Centre in central Durban.
This year’s 1860 memorial lecture will be delivered by Professor Ashwin Desai, titled “Making History, Writing History, Becoming History: An Ode to Surendra Bhana and Joy Brain” at 2.30pm.
Preceding the memorial lecture, Professor Rajend Mesthrie will deliver a public lecture at 1.30pm, analysing the Durban ship lists of indenture, 1860 – 1911.
