A NORTH Coast family is devastated after a single father was brutally stabbed to death with a sickle in front of his 6-year-old daughter. The attack stemmed from a dispute over a R750 loan from a loan shark for which he had stood as guarantor. GIVEN the history of failure by the KZN provincial government to rectify the shambles that passes for governance in Msunduzi Municipality, it is surprising that DA MPL Tammy Colley welcomes yet another provincial intervention in the capital’s city hall (the POST, August 27 – 31). For three periods between 2010 and 2024, the Msunduzi Municipality has been under section 139 provincial administration because of its inability to meet minimum service delivery standards. FAKE or not, the memo that went viral proposing a reduced quota of Indians who can gain admission to the Nelson R Mandela School of Medicine in Durban, is distressing for its perpetuation of racism. In an authentic-looking missive, some race-obsessed organisation or individual pushed for an increase in the allocation for coloured applicants from the current 9% to a minimum of 15%, and for the allocation for Indian applicants to be dropped from 19% to 13%. This change, the document states, is to ensure that students from underprivileged backgrounds - especially rural and township schools - have better access to medical education. According to the Association for Savings and Investment South Africa, the number of detected murder-for-money insurance fraud cases tripled – from 54 in 2023 to 161 in 2024. MORE than 1 400 years ago, the Prophet of Islam, Muhammad (peace be upon him) established rules of engagement that underscored compassion and forbade cruelty in warfare. After years of persecution and aggression from the Quraysh tribe in Mecca, the Muslims were eventually granted divine permission to fight, most notably at the Battle of Badr. Yet even then, strict rules applied: no mutilation of the dead, no killing of women, children or the elderly, no destruction of trees or inhabited areas, and prisoners were to be treated with dignity and respect. Many participants argued that Swami Vivekananda, representing Hinduism, was the most outstanding contributor to the discussions at the meeting held over several days. A minor altercation at Glenover Secondary in Chatsworth escalated into a violent incident, resulting in five pupils being stabbed. The KZN Department of Education (DoE) has condemned the incident which was allegedly “racially motivated and aggravated by adults”. THIS lecture, on the centenary of the Arya Samaj South Africa, is a tribute to the enduring legacy and memory of the late Pundit Nardev Vedalankar. As a teacher, religious and cultural leader, Pundit Vedalankar espoused and lived by values that stood in direct contrast with what the apartheid state sought to advance as gospel – he lived by the idea of a common and shared humanity – not divided by race, religion, language and difference. This is important when the world is severely fractured and religious identity is often used to fracture it even more. WE WILL always remember the straight-talking Neil de Beer, president of the UIM (United Independent Movement) for his bravery and the way that he called out ANC cadres, the EFF and recently, Jacob Zuma's MK Party. De Beer, having been Nelson Mandela’s national security adviser and also a former uMkhonto we Sizwe operative, knew South African politics better than most people.
