Forgotten passwords have been blamed for UK customers leaving nearly three billion pounds untouched in savings accounts. A survey of 4,000 customers from the National Savings and Investments (NS&I) shows an estimated seven million people have lost track of money in savings accounts or pensions. Half of those said they couldn’t remember the passwords needed to log in. One problem the research found is customers needing to recall numerous passwords for multiple accounts. However, 78 per cent of people believe digital technology has made it easier to manage their financial products. This figure rises to 89 per cent of 16-24 year olds, but falls to 69 per cent of those aged over 65. The research also shows that of those who believe they’ve lost savings, 34 per cent are unaware…

MPs have branded the government’s response to a parliamentary inquiry into fake news as a “missed opportunity”, with ministers accepting just three of 42 recommendations. Several proposals, including changing the rules on political campaigning to limit individual donations and a levy on tech firms to fund digital literacy, were rejected. Chrome 70 www.google.co.uk/chrome If you feel uneasy about allowing a web extension to “access data on all websites”, you’re in good company. Google shares your concern, and has added options in the latest version of Chrome (version 70) to restrict which websites an extension has ‘permissions’ for. Extensions need certain permissions to work - a password manager, for example, needs to know which site you’re visiting in order to fill in your login details. But some extensions will seek approval for sites they don’t need to work on. Whether intentionally or not, they could end up taking your data. Just five minutes earlier I had read online that Microsoft had decided to scrap Skype 7 on 1 November (confirmed in Computeractive in Issue 539, page 8). I feel sorry for people like Ben who have dedicated time and effort into getting familiar with a program, only to have it all yanked away by software developers whose motto is ‘change for change’s sake’. Just as you wouldn’t expect your lawyer to be an expert on root-canal treatment, it would be a surprise if your dentist started quoting paragraphs of the Consumer Rights Act (CRA) to you. I use a lot of browsers. Perhaps too many. Even Microsoft Edge gets the occasional run out, primarily for its fantastic Reading view that makes articles blighted by adverts, pop-ups and other annoyances much easier to read (Chrome take note!). Digital assistants are easy to rank by how likely they are to meaningfully answer a question: Google Assistant, Alexa, Siri, Cortana, a house brick, then Bixby. This isn’t the whole story, though. Google Assistant and Alexa are available in apps for Android and iOS, although opening the app wastes time. Siri only exists on Apple devices, Cortana on Windows, and Bixby in Samsung devices. Google’s Home speakers and Apple’s HomePod (pictured) contain their assistants just as Echo does Alexa. There’s no equivalent for Cortana, while a Samsung Galaxy Home speaker is coming soon. Irecently experienced a few problems with Internet Explorer on my Windows 10 PC, which included losing a number of menu options. After the usual troubleshooting methods – such as killing the browser’s background process, rebooting my PC, and so on – failed to fix them, I decided to reset the browser to its default settings. Microsoft describes how to reset Internet Explorer at www.snipca.com/29465. Unfortunately, all the options in my Tools menu were greyed-out, which meant I couldn’t use this method. After researching online, I came across an old Command Prompt solution to reset Internet Explorer 9 on a Windows 7 PC. ANDROID & iOS Share your location and find car-charging stations near you Google Maps has recently been updated with a few useful new features. WINDOWS 10 Respond to Windows’ confirmation prompts quicker Windows displays pop-up boxes prompting you to confirm certain actions. For example, if you delete a file, Windows will ask you to confirm this with Yes and No options. If you struggle to operate your trackpad or mouse, to save time you can make your cursor automatically go to the default option of your choice (Yes, for most occasions) when these pop-up windows appear. To set this up, open Settings, click Devices, Mouse on the left, then click the ‘Additional mouse options’ link. What is it? The new name for 802.11ax Wi-Fi. Er, OK. But what’s that? The old name for Wi-Fi 6! But seriously, it’s the latest Wi-Fi standard, four times faster than its predecessor 802.11ac. Better still, in a rare outbreak of common sense among tech experts, it has a name people can actually understand. In fact, previous standards have also been renamed. And they make sense too? Amazingly, yes. So 802.11ac (released in 2013) is now called Wi-Fi 5, while 802.11n (2009) is Wi-Fi 4, though it stops there. So there’s no Wi-Fi 3? Not officially, because it’s no longer widely used. But counting back it would be 802.11g (2003), with Wi-Fi 2 (1999) being 802.11a and Wi-Fi 1 being 802.11b (ditto). Got all that? Think so. Most junk programs disappear when you uninstall them, but the dodgy ones can leave malware. This could be anything from software that tracks your PC usage to target adverts at you, to a keylogger that detects each key press you make, stealing passwords and other data. If you have up-to-date security software, this malware should be detected, but if you’re concerned some has slipped through or just want a second opinion, it’s worth running the excellent Malwarebytes tool (www.snipca.com/29446). The lengths some websites go to in an effort to install junk on your computer is quite astonishing. And we’re not just talking about criminal websites. Visit popular websites such as Download.com, MajorGeeks.com and countless other download mirror sites, and you’ll drown in fake ‘Download Now’ buttons. Click one of these and you could end up downloading software you don’t want or – even worse – a virus. Ironically, you’ll even find these fake download buttons on web pages for PC-optimisation programs that are designed to clean junk. To further confuse you, the download link you actually need is often purposely hidden away to the side (see screenshot). Even tech-savvy uses are likely to accidentally click one of these fake links. When Microsoft acquired Skype in 2003, it seemed like a no-brainer. The service was already a massive success – surely, under Microsoft’s guardianship, it could only continue going from strength to strength? But time hasn’t been kind to this once-brilliant service and, while Microsoft hasn’t provided any figures that would suggest a decline in users, there’s no escaping the feeling that, in its current incarnation, Skype is a pale shadow of its former self. Amazon has launched its first waterproof Kindle Paperwhite ebook reader, offering protection for a depth of two metres for 60 minutes. The company says the ‘All-new Kindle Paperwhite’ will survive “getting splashed at the beach or dropped in the bath tub or pool”. It’s also thinner and lighter than the previous Paperwhite, and has twice the storage (8GB for £119). A bigger model with 32GB costs £150 (pay £219 to add 3G). Some of that storage can be used for audiobooks, because it’s the first Paperwhite that supports Audible, Amazon’s own audiobook service. It has Bluetooth too, letting you listen to audiobooks on compatible headphones or speakers. Manufacturers of ‘smart home’ devices have been given Government advice on how to make their gadgets safe from attack by hackers, as fears grow about how vulnerable they are. Ministers working with experts at the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) have drawn up a voluntary code of practice to cover gadgets that aren’t computing devices, but still require an internet connection. Often called the ‘Internet of Things’, such devices include smart TVs, doorbells, smartwatches, security cameras, toys and burglar alarms. There are expected to be 420 million in use in the UK by 2021. The guidance encourages companies to “embed security in the design process of new technology rather than bolt it on as an afterthought”. HMRC wants to arrest me I’m a wanted man! That’s according to an automated phone call I received recently, apparently from HMRC. It said there was a warrant for my arrest because I owed a huge tax bill. If that’s true, I thought, why don’t they just come to my house and arrest me? The message told me to ring a number to pay the outstanding balance. But as a former employee of HMRC, I know they would contact you by post - not phone or email - if you owed them money. Following David Sutton’s letter in Issue 537 (‘Reader recommends’, page 43) about the Motorola Moto G6 phone, I recently bought the cheaper ‘Play’ dual-SIM version of this phone - and I’m delighted with it! It does everything I need it to do speedily and without fuss. A week after I received my phone, the on/off button fell off. I contacted Amazon, where I bought the phone, and they passed me on to the Lenovo/Motorola service in Norwich. I posted my phone for repair on Tuesday afternoon and received it back on Friday morning, repaired free of charge with the operating system (Android) updated to the latest version. WARNING: JUNK AHEAD Junk offender: Microsoft Office 365 When I signed up for an Office 365 subscription, Microsoft promised “instant access to new features every month”. It turns out that translates into a near-constant stream of junk updates installed by stealth, adding features I don’t want. The trouble with Office 365 updates is that Microsoft installs them behind the scenes. They don’t ask permission or even let you know they’re being installed. So, quite often I’ll start work in the morning, only to discover that an update has installed new features that I’ll probably never use, or has altered existing tools in such a way that I have to waste time working out how to adapt. Worse is the fact that, as with their Windows equivalents, major Office 365 updates…

In a world where iPhones cost a grand and have names you can’t pronounce, it’s refreshing to see a smartphone for 70 quid that’s just called ‘1’. Notepad Microsoft rolls out these big Windows updates adding new tools and features to the operating system, but they often neglect their own programs in the process. Notepad is a perfect case in point. This is a tool I’ve used for many years, but with each major update Microsoft seems to overlook it, so that it’s being left behind by alternatives. For example, you can only undo your last edit, the program doesn’t let you open notes as separate tabs, and you can’t even change its theme to liven things up a bit. Other things are just annoying. Download from the developer Although no guarantee that you’ll avoid junk, downloading software from its developer’s site is less risky than using a third-party download mirror site. If you download elsewhere, you may find the installer contains added PUPs. Beware of fake search results Google has a nasty habit of displaying ads in search results that deliberately attempt to hijack your download. Since these appear at the top of the results, it’s easy to accidentally click one. Our advice is to ignore any search result with ‘Ad’ next to it. Q I’ve just got a new monitor, which is somewhat bigger than the old one it replaced. Everything is all bright and clear but on this new display the text-entry marker is really thin. I think this might be because the monitor’s resolution is much higher than before but the upshot is that sometimes I can barely see where the line is, so I don’t know if I’m about to type in the right place. Nvidia has once more attempted to disprove claims by conspiracy theorists that the Moon landings were faked, by using its new GPU (graphics processing unit) to recreate the Apollo 11 mission. Four years after using its GeForce GTX GPUs to render the way light would behave on the Moon, Nvidia has used its Turing GPU to recreate the event with greater precision. Conspiracy theorists have long argued that the lighting in footage of the Moon landing is incorrect and proof that the whole thing was filmed in a studio. Free trials used to come on CD-ROMs stuck on the front of computer magazines and were, in general, a good thing. Now, free trials are just the latest way for scammers to squeeze money out of their victims. Unscrupulous app developers are conning users into downloading apps as free trials, only to hit them with sneaky payments. One example is Scanner App for iOS. According to many reviews, this has started taking money from users without their permission. In some cases, it has recharged users who had already paid for the product. Its free trial lasts a measly three days, which must catch out many people. PUPs Potentially unwanted program - in other words any software on your PC that installed either without you knowing or inadvertently by you while installing other software (see box on p53 for how to avoid this). As we discovered, some startup items are very cryptic. On our PC, we found an item named ‘Program’ (see screenshot right), which rang alarm bells. Clicking ‘Search online’ ran a web search on the term ‘Program program’, which wasn’t very useful. However, we found out more by right-clicking the category bar and selecting the ‘Command line’ option, which displays where startup items are located. We were then able to establish that ‘Program’ was in fact ‘WSHelper.exe’, a tool associated with a Wondershare video download tool we’d long since uninstalled.
