B. 1921 Iris Barrel Apfel, an interior designer and textiles expert, was best known in recent years for her personal style which, in its riotous color and anything-goes abandon, made her a fashion icon in her 80s. No one ever accused Apfel of going gently into that dark night; she lit it up in neon-yellow tunics adorned with sparkly toucan decals, strings of necklaces with beads the size of duck eggs, a gazillion bangles on her wrists, and her signature dark-rimmed saucer eyeglasses.
“I like big, bold, and a lot of pizzazz,” she deadpanned in Iris, Albert Maysles’ 2014 documentary about her.
