Trailed by Apple CEO Tim Cook on social media platform X (formerly Twitter) with a “there’s something in the air” looping video, the latest iPad Air arrived at the start of a flurry of announcements that Apple made in the first week of March. While outwardly little has changed over the previous model (launched in May 2024) the 11- and 13-inch models have been given a refresh internally, making them more powerful than before. The iPad Air (2025) now comes with an Apple silicon M3 chip with an 8-core CPU and a 9-core GPU, which Apple says makes it 2x faster than the M1 iPad Air, offering 35% faster performance in multi-threaded CPU workflows and up to 40% faster graphics performance. Receiving by far the biggest upgrade of all the Macs that Apple revealed in March is the Mac Studio, which now sports a choice of M4 Max or M3 Ultra chips. Apple’s compact ‘pro’ desktop starts at £2,099 for an M4 Max model equipped with a 14-core CPU, 32-core GPU, 16-core Neural Engine, 36GB of unified memory and 512GB of solid-state storage and rapidly steps up from there. Photos got a redesign in macOS Sequoia, with a new interface which brings tools and pictures to a single screen. The sidebar’s been overhauled, and the app as a whole has gained some great new features, some of which are powered by Apple Intelligence. 1 Natural language When searching your Photos library, you can now use more natural language. Thanks to Apple Intelligence, requests (typed or through Siri) such as ‘Alison eating’ or ‘cat on the stairs’ are catered for, and you can also search for an action that took place in a video, and you’re taken to that particular segment. 2 Create memories Another feature powered by Apple Intelligence enables you to create your own memories, simply by typing a description of what you want to see. Apple’s built-in apps are packed with features, and these four are no exception. Again, some of these were introduced with macOS Sequoia, and others have been available in the apps for longer, but all are worth checking out. 1 Reading Goals In the Apple Books app, click Home in the sidebar and then scroll the main window all the way to the bottom. You see a feature called Reading Goals. Here you can set targets for time spent reading every day, and for books read in a year. Hover your pointer over the upper or lower panel, and icons appear in their top right. Click the icon that looks like switches and you can change these goals. Launched at the same time as the new iPad Air, Apple’s most affordable iPad also got an upgrade. Still equipped with a 10.9-inch Liquid Retina display, the Wi-Fi only iPad (2025) now gets Apple’s A16 chip and 128GB of storage to start (twice as much as before) for £329, 256GB of storage for £429 and 512GB of storage for £629, while Wi-Fi + Cellular models start at £479 and rise to £779. Many of Apple’s rivals have launched foldable phones over the past few years, but Apple has stayed out of the game. That could soon change, though, with several sources claiming that a folding iPhone is on the horizon. Recently, well-regarded Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo released some guidance on the device. According to Kuo, it will come with a sky-high asking price of $2,500 (about £1,900). In return, you’ll get a book-style folding design with a Touch ID button on the side, a dual-lens camera on the back, and an ultra-thin battery. Kuo says it will be a “true AI-driven phone”. There are some great hidden features in Mail, Messages and Safari in macOS Sequoia, some of which are powered by Apple Intelligence. These include Writing Tools, an Apple Intelligence feature that’s available almost everywhere that you can write. Let’s take a look at them. 1 Safari Highlights The new Highlights feature summarises important information on websites, giving quick access to location, opening hours and more. To activate it, in the Safari menu, open Settings and click the Advanced tab. Check the box labelled ‘Allow Highlights to share web addresses with Apple’. The Finder is a lot easier to use when you’re aware of its hidden gems, and there are some great features in System Settings. Some are new, some were introduced before macOS 15 Sequoia, but they all deserve a mention. 1 Tabbed Finder windows You can use tabs in Finder windows, just like you can in Safari. To open a new tab, click on a Finder window and press Cmd+T. When the tab bar is visible, you can use the ‘+’ symbol on its right too. Hover over a tab and click the 'X' that appears to close it. With Image Playground you can create great pictures for use in other apps (or just for fun), and if you can’t find an emoji that suits your needs, you can create one with Genmoji. There have been many impressive rivals since the first generation of Apple Watch was launched. Some of those rivals are fitness trackers first and smartwatches second, like the Fitbit Sense 2 and the Garmin Forerunner range.
