IN 1955, a group of musicians in Cato Manor, in Durban, united to form a band that would become synonymous with music across generations.
The Crescendos, founded by the late Krish Govender, have been a cornerstone of South Africa’s music scene, and this month it will celebrate its 70th anniversary.
“The members of The Crescendos in the early years spent their time honing their craft in local house parties where they captivated audiences with instrumental ballroom and Latin music. The original members included drummer Teddy Peters, bassist Douglas Bailey, saxophonists Morgan Pillay and Ben Maharaj, and guitarist Thomas Pillay. As the months passed, more musicians joined the ensemble, all eager to showcase their skills,” said Klive Pillay, a drummer, who joined The Crescendos 45 years ago.
