Virgin Media O2 says it has finished upgrading its entire network of 15.5 million homes to gigabit speeds.
It becomes the first major provider to have completed a full gigabit upgrade, offering speeds that now average 1,130Mbps (1.13Gbps) – more than 22 times faster than the national average of 50.4Mbps.
Properties in Exeter, Luton, Rochdale and parts of Surrey were among the final 1.1 million to be connected.
The company boasted that it has “single-handedly” hit its target in just two years, adding that this represents two-thirds of the Government’s ambition to connect 85 per cent of the UK by 2025.
Openreach, Virgin Media O2’s biggest rival, has so far connected six million premises to gigabit speeds, and aims to reach 25 million by December 2026.
