Virgin Mobile customers have reacted with anger to new pay-as-you-go prices that charge them £6 a day for sending a single text, making a single call and using any data. From 18 November, Virgin will charge a flat rate of £2 for just one call, up to 200 minutes. It will also charge £2 for one text, up to 200 texts, and for using data, up to 200MB. It means customers who make just one call a day will pay £60 a month. You’ll pay the same if you send just one text message a day. Not all pay-as-you-go customers will be moved to this deal. 30,000 ‘SEXTORTION’ EMAILS SENT AN HOUR Scammers are sending 30,000 ‘sextortion’ emails an hour falsely claiming they have videos of the recipients performing a sex act. More than 500,000 hijacked PCs have been turned into a botnet to bombard people with the emails. They threaten to publish the videos online if a payment of $800 isn’t made. An NHS secretary who was sacked aged 86 because she “wouldn’t use the office computer” has become the oldest person in the UK to win a payout for age discrimination. Eileen Jolly, now 89, was sacked from Royal Berkshire Hospital in January 2017 after a manager claimed her “old secretarial ways” prevented her from learning how to use computers. She said at the time: “I felt as though he had assumed that at my age and because of my health I was a liability and incapable of change, and had to go”. May I politely suggest that these visits aren’t free, but are just something you’re paying for in your monthly bill. We live in a strange world where a company sends engineers to fix problems with their equipment and can boast about doing it without charging you. Recently, I ordered a dual colour/black cartridge refilled pack from Stinkyink (www.stinkyinkshop.co.uk). It arrived very promptly, but the colour cartridge was not accepted by my Canon printer, despite me trying several times to make it work. I contacted Stinkyink and two hours later they advised me to carry out certain operations with the printer. I tried these but, alas, they didn’t work. Your recommendation of the Chromecast device prompted me to wonder whether my Samsung TV might be smart enough to do the same thing without any added hardware. I was delighted to find it was! WINDOWS 10 Reveal hidden audio effects Depending on the make and model of your sound card, you may be able to turn on a range of effects to improve your PC’s audio quality. To find out what’s available on your sound card, open the Sound Settings window by clicking Start, typing sound settings, and selecting Sound Settings. Next, click the Sound Control Panel link - you’ll find this either in the top-right corner of the window or at the very bottom. If you’re working in LibreOffice and your computer crashes, the next time you run the program it will offer to recover your unsaved work. While sometimes handy, declining the offer takes three individual clicks, which can soon get annoying. To avoid this, you can disable this prompt (while keeping the saving process enabled), then turn it back on when you actually want to recover a document. To do so, click Start, then type writer. LibreOffice Writer should appear in the results. Right-click it, then select ‘Open file location’ and a File Explorer window containing shortcuts to all LibreOffice programs will appear. Not only is it where you store your files, but it’s also the launchpad for your PC’s entire operating system every time you switch it on. The Government has scrapped plans to make people prove they are over 18 to watch porngraphy online amid concerns from websites and privacy fears. The law had already been postponed twice as ministers and the adult industry struggled to come up with a system that worked. One idea was for newsagents to sell ‘porn passes’ to people who could prove they were 18 or over. These would contain a code to sign into adult sites. Another proposal was for people to prove their age by signing into sites through ‘Digital ID’ apps, though privacy campaigners warned hackers would target this data to blackmail users. The Church of England is working with Vodafone and O2 to build antennas on churches in order to boost phone signals in areas with poor coverage. It has agreed a new scheme with Cornerstone, the company that runs Vodafone and O2’s masts, to build 4G and 5G antennas in an “efficient, predictable and fair process”. Churches are often the tallest buildings in rural areas, meaning they can distribute signals to a wider area. Masts have been placed on many churches over the past 25 years, but this latest scheme provides legal details that make it easier for local clergy to decide whether to add one to their own church. Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg has suggested that if the site had existed in 2003 it might have helped to prevent the Iraq War. In a speech at Georgetown University, Washington DC, that was streamed live online, Zuckerberg claimed that the war happened in part because people around the world lacked the technology to consider how others felt. Referring to his time at Harvard University, he said there was a mood of “disbelief” among students when the war began. Zuckerberg studied psychology and computer science at Harvard between 2002 and 2004 until dropping out to concentrate on Facebook. Microsoft gives me more headaches than CCleaner As a user of CCleaner for over 15 years without problems, I think it’s reprehensible that Microsoft has banned people recommending the program in its forums (News, Issue 564, page 9). My own usage has mainly been confined to the basic settings, as many features in the more advanced settings are beyond my computing knowledge and comprehension. It might be a ravenous, data-gobbling, beast of a company, but you’ve got to hand it to Google: it knows how to make complex tasks simple. And this is definitely the case when it comes to accessing computers from afar. Over the years, I’ve used various tools to gain remote access to my PC (AnyDesk, GoToMyPC, TeamViewer and more), but none come close to the simplicity of my current favourite: Chrome Remote Desktop (CRD). SMARTWATCH | £399 from Apple www.snipca.com/33068 After last year’s introduction of ECG (electrocardiogram) heart monitoring, which can warn you if your heart shows signs of irregular rhythm, there’s no big new hardware feature in the new Apple Watch, but it’s still a significant upgrade. Adobe Acrobat Pro I used to subscribe to Adobe Acrobat Pro and could claim the cost back on work expenses. When I retired a few years back I needed to find a cheaper - preferably free - alternative for editing PDFs. And what I use instead I tried several PDF editors that claimed to be free, but they always seemed to have some catch. When you’re enjoying your favourite music on your headphones, the last thing you want is Windows audio notifications ruining the experience, such as when a new email arrives. There are two ways to avoid this. One involves lowering the volume of Windows notifications; the other is to divert the audio to your computer’s speakers, not your headphones. To do either, first start playing your music on your computer, then click Start, type sound settings, and select the Sound Settings options in the results. If you’re trying to recover files on an old drive, you may find your progress is blocked by an error message telling you that you don’t have the correct permissions to access a folder. This usually happens with personal folders (Documents, Photos, Music and so on) that are locked to another user account. The way round this is to take ownership of the folders so that you can open them and retrieve their contents. Microsoft has made the procedure convoluted but with a little patience it can be worthwhile. First, right-click the folder you want to access, select Properties, then the Security tab. Choose between Local and Microsoft accounts When you first sign into Windows 10, you can choose to enter your old Windows 7 account details or sign in with a new Microsoft account. With the latter, your Windows settings are synced across all the PCs you use, and you can quickly reset your password online if you forget it. Q I’m trying to install a copy of Serif DrawPlus 8 on to my new Lenovo IdeaPad 320S laptop, from the original Serif CD. We use Facebook, Twitter and WhatsApp to organise and promote meetings, as well as to make connections with other enthusiasts throughout the country. How long should a product last? This question, regularly asked by Computeractive readers, has been partly answered by the European Union’s new ‘right to repair’ Ecodesign Directive. From April 2021 companies will have to supply spare parts for goods for up to 10 years after they’ve first gone on sale. The rules apply to lighting products and white goods like washing machines and fridges, though not PCs, phones or tablets. What is it? Air-quality sensors (like Airthing’s Wave Mini, pictured) increasingly feature in home devices and detect potentially harmful substances in the air. These so-called ‘Volatile organic compounds’ (VOCs) include the smelly chemicals released by fresh paint, new furniture and cosmetics, and can also be released by open fires. ‘Particulates’ are fine solids or droplets, including smoke. These could cause allergy-like symptoms, irritation, nausea, tiredness or long-term damage to the lungs and other organs. WI-FI Set up dynamic DNS to access cameras remotely I loved Issue 565’s Cover Feature on advanced ways to master your Wi-Fi network, but here’s one idea you missed out. When your router connects to the web, it’s given a temporary address by your service provider. The reason it’s temporary is that there aren’t enough addresses to go around. They need to be recycled for use by other people when you don’t need them. This can be a problem if, like me, you’ve got a security camera set up that you need to monitor when away from home, and there’s no app to access it. LIBREOFFICE CALC & MICROSOFT EXCEL Flip a column of cells Excel and Calc both let you use filters to re-order a column of cells in ascending or descending order. However, these filters won’t let you simply flip a column of values (so the first moves to the bottom, the last to the top, and so on, independent of sequencing). To do this, you need to use a slightly different method. First, insert a new column to the left of the cells you want to flip. In this new column, type 1 in the top cell, then 2 in the second.
